Apps from last week

I just wanted to share with the 4 app I downloaded last for my iPhone and iPad.

First off for my iPhone was Waze (http://world.waze.com/).  It’s a basically Free SatNav, but what is great is that it uses Crowdsourcing for travel information.

Next is VoucherCloud (http://www.vouchercloud.com/)  The guy in my local corner shop showed me this.  As it suggests you get discount vouchers on you iPhone.  It works really well.

I downloaded this on my iPhone but it’s better on the iPad.  For the plane spotter in me, its Flight Radar (http://www.flightradar24.com/).  Its bloody amazing now many planes are in the air at one time, and this app and website lets you trackem.

and finally the programmer in me found iPowershell from the boys at Sapien (http://www.primaltools.com/downloads/communitytools/).  It basically contains full descriptions of each and every core PowerShell Version 1 cmdlet, their syntax, parameters and examples of proper usage. Its a very cool reference app and it’s FREE

Lets see what Apps this week brings…

Good bye Windows Mobile .. Hello iPhone

I have been using PIM devices for a very long time.  It started with a Psion, then on Palm until a Microsoft entered the frame.  I had numerous Compaq iPaqs, some HTC devices and finally converged to windows mobile with combined phone/PDA.  My latest Windows Mobile device is a Samsung Omnia.

Now before I upgraded to it, all around me had this iPhone thing. I thought it looks nice, but I will stick with what I have.  I upgraded my Omnia to Windows Mobile 6.1 and all was fine, but the phone just felt sluggish.  All I really use on a phone is push activesync to my exchange server and my hotmail (that was push but this just killed the battery).  I had hoped the Omnia would be a “swish” as the iphone, but I was very wrong!

Now the apps for WM devices are really good, but you have to hunt for them or find them by word of mouth.  This is a bit of a pain, but I suffered ;-)

Push came to shove when I was called on my omnia and the device just looked at me and rang .. it didn’t show me the number calling or anything.  Then a number of times I would make a call and it would drop out.  I would reset the device and that didn’t help.

So to the iPhone.  My main b1tch about the iPhone is O2.  I have been with tmobile for a long time.  I have a number of SIMs with them and I don’t want to move, just to get an iPhone.  Ari pointed me to play.com as the offer sim free, unlocked iPhones.  Okay they are not cheap but its an option.

My iPhone came with an Italian manual, and once I had installed iTunes, it registered and works like a dream .. time to play ;-)

So it’s been a few days, and boy, in comparison to Windows Mobile .. well there is no comparison.  I can NOW see what all the fuss is about, the iPhone is an awesome bit of kit, responsive, easy to use and the App Store just rocks.  Even battery life in comparison to my Omnia is excellent, only 50% in a day, and I am abusing it more than the Omnia.

I am finding that its hard to put down, and getting applications from the App Store is so simple and a lot of the them are free.

My current favourites of the moment are: TweetDeck, mBox Mail (for my hotmail), Faces Lite (for picture contacts), Tube Boards, Sky News, Sky+ and Ragdoll lite.  [Thanks to Ari, Matt and Manoj for recommending these!]

I have also invested in an incipio feather cover from amazon and a ZAGG invisibleSHIELD from Carphone warehouse.

I’ll let you know how I get on, but this is one of the best gadget choices I have made in a very long time ..

I'm not a PC

Shawn, Richard, you can take that smile off your face … Yesterday I became the owner of my Second Mac, but this time I have kept OS X on it. (I have a Mac Pro that runs Windows 2008 and this blog runs in virtual server)

I’m up in Edinburgh and had the need or a PC, and a Mac Mini fit the bill.  What is amazing (and I know you Apple people already know) is that pluging almost anything in just works, no prompting for drivers or anything, it just works … and the wireless mouse and keyboard just work too, but th keyboard is a delight to use, and I can see why people love Mac Books … but I will wait for a Mac Tablet (they have to make one and live in hope)

The Samsung Omnia i900

Ohh, could THIS be my new mobile?  I found a mini review in stuff magazine last night

Check out Samsung’s site here: http://omnia.samsungmobile.com/

So iPhone 2.0 or the Omnia .. a lot of reviews around comparing the two, and putting the users in two camp … either with Apple/Jobs or Microsoft/Gates.  The thing that puts me off an iPhone is that I dont want to join O2 I want to stay with T-Mobile, so that puts the iPhone on the back burner unless I can get a dodgy one from the states.  But the Omnia looks niiiiiiiiice

iPhone 3g

So Ari isn’t too bitter that o2 messed things up big style and he wont get his until next week, but the news on the web is quite amusing.

This is funny (in a strange kinda way) iPhone 3G: UK gets long wait as O2 systems fail

Check this guy our: One-man queue for iPhone 3G in the UK love the sleeping bag  But was it worth it, “Sadly, Sunil doesn’t even intend to buy an iPhone 3G. Instead, he is hoping to sell his first-place spot in the queue via eBay.” and he did for £41 and 10% will go to Oxfam, so he only got £36.90!  I wonder if he works for the sleeping bag company :-o

Decisions Decisions … an iPhone2 or not?

So I have had a look and play with a HTC Touch Diamond and its … okay, was a bit sluggish, but I seem some firmware updates have emerged so maybe its got better.

But what about the iPhone2? with 3g, its a sweet bit of kit, but has one very BIG issue for me … and that is o2.  I dont want to change from t-mobile, so why has apple take the stupid decision to stick with just one mobile phone provider?

The Microsoft or Nokia or anyother phone manufacturer, just make the phone and anyone can sell it on .. if apple followed this model they will sell a hell of a lot more iPhone .. instead, me thinks a trip to the good ole USA is due to pick up a grey market one.

Then I saw this baby, the HTC Touch Pro .. based on the HTC Touch Diamond but with a keyboard .. hummm, but not as sexy as the iPhone .. Decisions, Decisions .. what should I do?
