WTF within a week an update

BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0 Service Pack 3 Maintenance Release 1 for MS Exchange is now available for download.

http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/deliverables/26577/BlackBerry_Enterprise_Server_for_Microsoft_Exchange-Maintenance_Release_Notes–1561918-0404053903-001-5.0.3-US.pdf

What’s new
The BlackBerry® Enterprise Trait Tool includes a new trait named ExchangeEnablePropertyPromotion. This trait specifies if and how the BlackBerry Messaging Agent promotes MAPI properties. The possible values are:

  • 0 – disabled
  • 1 – The BlackBerry Messaging Agent promotes MAPI properties on all folder reloads, if required.
  • 2 – The BlackBerry Messaging Agent promotes MAPI properties on all folder reloads, if required, except for the first folder reload. On the first folder reload the BlackBerry Messaging Agent does not promote MAPI properties.

Example: To disable the promotion of MAPI properties for the BlackBerry Domain, type:
traittool -global -trait ExchangeEnablePropertyPromotion -set 0.

Example: To disable the promotion of MAPI properties for a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server instance, type:
traittool -server -trait ExchangeEnablePropertyPromotion -set 0

Fixed issues

  • BlackBerry Administration Service
If one BlackBerry® Administration Service instance sent a reconciliation task to a second instance, and the connection between the instances dropped before the second instance could notify the first that the reconciliation was complete, reconciliation stopped on all BlackBerry Administration Service instances. The first BlackBerry Administration Service instance then wrote the following error to its log file: “org.jboss.remoting.CannotConnectException: Can not get connection to server. Problem establishing socket connection for InvokerLocator [sslsocket:”. The BlackBerry Administration Service checks for unprocessed reconciliation events every 24 hours and restarts them at that time. For more information, contact RIM Support. (DT 1159175)
  • BlackBerry Messaging Agent
In some circumstances email messages were not delivered promptly because of high disk I/O on Microsoft® Exchange 2010 mailbox servers. (DT 1141515)

New High Availability Feature Article and Updated Support Guidance for Exchange 2010
A database availability group (DAG), together with mailbox database copies, can provide automatic recovery from a variety of server, storage, network, and other hardware failures. A DAG can also provide a site resilience solution so that you can perform a datacenter switchover in the event of a site-level disaster. But even a comprehensive, intelligent, and robust solution such as a DAG can’t protect you from all possible disasters, including disasters that affect an entire DAG. For example, consider a two-member DAG deployed in a single datacenter. If the datacenter experiences a flood, fire, or other cataclysmic event that destroys the DAG, the entire DAG will need to be rebuilt from scratch.  How do you do that?

960384: Description of Update Rollup 7 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1

Well the Exchange team blog says it all:

Yes, it has been only 5 weeks since we shipped the last update roll-up on February 10 and usually our gap between roll-ups is about eight weeks. Since the release of update roll-up 6, we have fixed about 50 issues and wanted to go ahead and provide them to customers.

… The release of the roll-up via Microsoft Update will happen on March 24

So what do we have in this KB.  Well 50 fixes listed in v1.0 and this really is a bug fix release:

  1. 946449 A non-read report message is sent after you perform a “Mark All as Read” operation against unread e-mail messages in Exchange Server 2007

  2. 949113 Unexpected modified instances of a recurring meeting may appear when you use Entourage to access a calendar on a computer that is running Exchange Server 2007

  3. 949114 Duplicate calendar items may appear when you use Entourage to access a calendar on an Exchange 2007 server

  4. 949464 The customized properties are removed in the recipients’ calendars when you send a meeting request that includes customized properties

  5. 950115 When a CDO 1.2.1-based application generates a meeting request that includes some European characters in the message body, these characters appear as question marks in Exchange 2007

  6. 951341  Users cannot read calendar items when they connect Exchange Server 2007 by using certain IMAP4 or POP3 clients

  7. 952778 Event ID 9874 is frequently logged on Exchange Server 2007 with Service Pack 1

  8. 953094 The value in the “Messages queued for submission” performance counter on the mailbox role of Exchange Server 2007 increases after a meeting request is delivered

  9. 954213 All Test commands that are related to the Client Access Server fail when you run the commands on an Exchange 2007 server in a disjoint namespace

  10. 954741 The UseRUSServer parameter does not work if an administrator has specified an RUS server on a target mailbox server

  11. 954898 The LegacyExchangeDN attributes for mail-enabled objects are incorrectly set in an environment that contains Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007

  12. 955027 The Edgetransport.exe process may crash on a hub transport server that is running Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1

  13. 955462 You notice high CPU usage when the IMAP service is running on an Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1 server that has the CAS role

  14. 955778  You receive a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) message when you send an e-mail message to a non-SMTP address in an Outlook client that is using Cached mode

  15. 956069 A Non-Delivery Report (NDR) is generated when an Exchange Server 2007 user tries to send a message to a recipient who has a one-off FAX address that includes any characters that are larger than 0xFF in Unicode

  16. 956205 Corrupted characters appear in the Subject field or in the Location field of a recurring calendar item after a user adds DBCS characters to a field in a meeting occurrence by using an Outlook 2002 client

  17. 956275  An Exchange 2007 sender’s address is split into two separate addresses when an external recipient replies to the message

  18. 956455 The display name appears in a received message even though the property of the user mailbox is set to “Hide from Exchange address lists” in Exchange Server 2007

  19. 956687 Messages stay in the submission queue after you enable per-mailbox database journaling in an Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2007 coexisting environment

  20. 957019 Images cannot be pasted in an Exchange Server 2007 Outlook Web Access message body

  21. 957071 The MSExchange Transport service may crash intermittently on the Exchange 2007 server

  22. 957124 do not receive an NDR message even though your meeting request cannot be sent successfully to a recipient

Thursday, June 19, 2008: Momentum Webcast: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Mailbox Role Memory Characterization Using HP BladeSystem (Level 200)
When Microsoft set out to design its next-generation Exchange platform, Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, one of the major objectives was to tame the I/O demands, which the previous versions placed on the disk storage subsystem. These demands required Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 customers to focus on storage performance and not just on disk capacity. If the storage solution was not capable of providing the disk I/O performance needed, the server would bottleneck, and response times would increase, resulting in unhappy users.
With Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft is able to move to a 64-bit operating system using Windows Server 2003 x64 platforms. This allowed for significant increases in available memory resources for the application, which in turn allowed memory to scale well beyond the four gigabytes available to Exchange Server 2003. Designers could now cache greater portions of the Exchange database(s) in memory. By increasing database cache, larger portions of the user’s mailbox can now be cached, reducing the I/O demands on disk.

In this webcast, we demonstrate the benefits of additional system memory in the HP ProLiant BL480c blade server, and also provide details on other performance considerations when working larger memory configurations.

Tuesday, June 24, 2008: TechNet Webcast: How Microsoft IT uses the Exchange Hosted Services to Protect the Messaging Environment (Level 300)
Microsoft deploys and supports more than 130,000 Exchange Server mailboxes for the global organization. All mail delivered to mailboxes@microsoft.com is first routed through Exchange Hosted Services, a hosted service that filters mail for spam and viruses and enforces corporate e-mail policies “in the cloud” before the mail reaches the Microsoft corporate network. This session describes Microsoft IT deployment, including server configuration and implementation, collecting server evidence, and lessons learned from deployment. Exchange Hosted
Services is a service offering to enterprises that currently serves over 10,000 customers and processes 3.5 billion messages across the EHS global network.
